Community Scholarship Resources
Researching local and regional scholarships
Smaller local awards are often less competitive than national ones. Here is how to find them and prepare.
Regional Scholarships
Awards offered for students from a particular county, metro area, or multi-state region.
Research steps
- Check county websites, regional employers, and civic clubs.
- Note whether the award is renewable or one-time.
- Confirm the essay, transcript, and recommendation requirements early.
Community Foundation Programs
Local foundations often manage many small donor-funded scholarship funds under one application.
Research steps
- Search for the community foundation that serves your county.
- One shared application may cover dozens of named funds.
- Deadlines are often in late winter or early spring. Verify each year.
Local Student Assistance
Help that is not always a grant: textbook funds, emergency aid, transportation help, and tutoring.
Research steps
- Ask your school's financial aid or student services office.
- Public libraries and workforce centers may list local programs.
- Distinguish one-time emergency help from ongoing support.
